The occurrence of chimeric transcripts has been reported in many cancer cells and seen as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Modern high-throughput sequencing technologies offer a way to investigate individual chimeric transcripts and the systematic information of associated gene expressions from underlying genomic translocations.

Chimeric RNA, sometimes referred to as a fusion transcript, is composed of exons from two or more different genes and have the potential to encode novel proteins.[1] These mRNAs are different from those produced by conventional splicing as they are produced by two or more gene loci.

A fusion gene is a hybrid gene formed from two previously separate genes. It can occur as a result of: translocation, interstitial deletion, or chromosomal inversion.
